The Painted Veil by W.S.Maugham can be justly called a love story, but it's not quite a usual one. It goes much deeper into the psychology of everyone involved than it's usually done in love stories. Everybody has elusions about Life and two people have to confront each other when the veil around it drops and they have to go through a lot of disconnections, punishment and it has, unfortunately, no happy end.
So what does it tell us about? It mirrors life of top people of that time, highlighting their vulgarity, snobbery and cynicism. Their life was a stage where they were playing the right roles and wearing the right masks
